For many coffee lovers, enjoying iced coffee is a delicious alternative to traditional hot coffee, especially on hot summer days — or even the only way to drink coffee for die-hard coffee drinkers!☕❄ ️ In this article, we'll take a look at the history and different variations of iced coffee, while also revealing tips for making delicious cold brew coffee.
The History of Iced Coffee
The origins of iced coffee date back to the 19th century, around the 1840s. French soldiers deployed in Algeria would add ice or water to their coffee to cool down. This practice gave rise to a recipe called Café Mazagran, which quickly gained popularity in France and across Europe. However, it was in the United States in the 1920s that the consumption of cold coffee really exploded, largely thanks to the rise of iconic chains.
Iced Coffee Variations
If you want to make a delicious iced coffee, it is important to know what type of drink you would like to enjoy. Some of the most popular options include traditional iced coffee, the iconic iced latte, cold brew coffee, frappe coffee, and many more. In this section, we will explain the differences between these delicious ways to enjoy coffee cold.
Iced Coffee vs Iced Latte
Iced coffee is typically made by adding ice cubes to instant or drip coffee, then adding sugar and cream. Iced lattes, on the other hand, are made with espresso and milk (or plant-based alternatives), creating a creamier, smoother drink. Iced lattes are often enhanced with syrups or spices for added flavor.
Iced Coffee vs Cold Brew Coffee
Cold brew coffee is made by steeping ground coffee in cold water for several hours. This method produces a smoother and more refreshing drink. While traditional iced coffee can have a slight bitterness, cold brew offers a different taste experience, ideal for those who prefer a more delicate and subtle taste.
