You’ve recently developed a love for coffee, but you’re still new to espresso and don’t have all the necessary equipment yet! No worries! We’ve done some research and found a few ways to fix this problem! Here are 3 ways to grind your coffee with items you probably already have at home!

Mortar and pestle

Have you ever wondered how people made great coffee before modern technology?

This first way of grinding coffee beans is the one that was used in the past! Traditionally used for spices, the mortar and pestle represents an easy and effective method for grinding very finely. It is a simple approach, which allows for fairly complete control over the size of the coffee grind.

How to proceed:

  1. Add a small amount of coffee beans to a dry mortar (about 1/3 to ½ of the mortar).
  2. Using circular motions, use the pestle to grind the beans, applying good pressure.
  3. Continue this process of crushing the beans until you achieve the desired texture.

Rolling pin / Hammer

If you prefer a coarser grind, a rolling pin is the perfect solution! This is a very simple method that only takes 2 items: a rolling pin or hammer and something to hold the beans (reusable bag, 2 sheets of parchment paper...)

How to proceed:

  1. Place the coffee beans in a Ziplock bag, between two sheets of parchment paper, or whatever you choose to contain them.
  2. Use the rolling pin to apply pressure to the beans until you reach your desired grind size, or get a little more adventurous by using a hammer to crush the beans!

Mixer or food processor

Looking for a solution that requires a little less manual force? Blending is probably the easiest and fastest way to ensure your beans are ground to your preference!

How to proceed:

  1. In your blender or food processor, add a few coffee beans.
  2. To make sure it doesn't overheat, pulse the beans and check the grind after each short pulse until you reach the consistency you want!

Your morning brew is still possible even without a coffee grinder . With a little creativity, you can make your coffee beans any grind you want. Using a traditional mortar and pestle method, releasing some of the stored stress, or using a quick and easy way like a blender, you can enjoy coffee exactly the way you want it!
