We recently had the pleasure of welcoming our friend Vincenzo Vinci to the Café Show. A true master in the art of crafting traditional Italian gelato, he shared with us his passion and expertise for this smooth and flavorful frozen dessert. In this episode, he not only talked about his journey learning the craft of gelato-making but also shared his tips for making delicious affogatos!

If, for you too, the gelato and espresso combo is pure happiness, here are Vincenzo’s suggestions to elevate your affogatos at home! There are no limits to your imagination—let your creativity flow and create combos that bring you joy! At the coffee shop, we use the delicious gelatos from Fabbrica, made using Vincenzo’s very own recipes. If you ever get the chance to try them, jump on it!

The Classic Affogato

Making a classic affogato couldn’t be easier.

  • Place one scoop of gelato (any flavor you like) in a bowl or cup.
  • Pour a single short espresso over the gelato.

If you're using two scoops of gelato, simply pull a double short espresso. Don’t have an espresso machine at home? No problem—you can easily make coffee using a moka pot, French press, pour-over cone, or drip coffee maker. All you need is about 1 oz of prepared coffee poured over your gelato, and voilà!

Pistachio Cream in the Spotlight

If you haven’t yet discovered the pistachio cream from our friends at Favuzzi, run—don’t walk! Not only is it a delight spread on crepes, croissants, and waffles, but it’s also exquisite in an affogato!

  • Place a small spoonful of pistachio spread at the bottom of a cup or small bowl.

  • Add one scoop of gelato—vanilla is ideal—on top of the pistachio spread.

  • Pour a single short espresso over the gelato.

Enjoy the incredible combination of pistachio, vanilla, and coffee flavors!

The Breakfast Affogato

Who says gelato is only for dessert? Vincenzo suggests reimagining your breakfast cereal bowl—affogato-style! That’s right! In the morning, we usually have coffee and cereal with milk, but what if, on a fun and funky morning, we swapped the milk for gelato?

  • Place one scoop of gelato in the bottom of a cup or bowl.

  • Add a small handful of blueberry granola over the gelato.

  • Pour a single short espresso on top.

    The perfect vacation breakfast!

For Caramel Lovers

If you’re the type to eat caramel by the spoonful, just imagine it blended with creamy gelato and freshly pulled espresso!

  • In a small bowl or cup, place a small spoonful of your favorite caramel.

  • Add ½ of a short single espresso to dilute the caramel. Stir the caramel and espresso together until smooth.

  • Add one scoop of gelato (vanilla, chocolate, tiramisu...) on top of the caramel-espresso mix.

  • Pour the remaining ½ espresso shot over it.

Finish it off with a drizzle of caramel on top to complete this dessert in style!
