Rocket makes many models of espresso machines, such as the Giotto and Mozzafiato. Each of these models have two versions: type V and type R. Although they have many characteristics in common, it is important to understand the differences between them in order to make an informed decision when purchasing a Rocket machine.

The Type V

The Mozzafiato and Giotto Type V can be visually distinguished by their uniquely white dials. These two machines have several very useful functions to make your life easier, such as a chronometer which allows you to precisely calculate the extraction time. They also both have a PID (Proportional Integral Derivative), a system that indicates the temperature of the boiler and allows you to adjust it for better control over the taste of the espresso.

However, the distinguishing feature of the type V is the vibration pump, which is where it gets its name (V for vibration), and its affordable price. This type of pump is generally less expensive than the rotary pump (type R) and is a good option for making high-quality espresso at a lower price.

Type R

In the same way that type V gets its name from the vibration pump, the Giotto and the Mozzafiato Type R get their name from the rotary pump, which allows for greater stability when pulling espresso and better brew group durability. Commercial machines generally use this pump, which is as quiet as the Type V model. It’s the best pump on the market, which explains the slightly higher price for these machines.

Another advantage of type R is that it’s possible to connect it directly to a water supply, which means that as there is no need to fill it from above it can save on kitchen space. The plumbing connection kit is provided with the machine, although it’s recommended that you install an additional filter to ensure the machine’s long-term durability.

The type Rs are visually distinguishable by their black dials. They do also share some other features with the type V that we did not mention, such as the PID and the chronometer.
