History
The Chemex was invented in 1941 by German chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. Over his career he created over 300 devices in an effort to make daily-use items more functional and beautiful. With the Chemex, his aim was to produce an attractive brewing system that could yield the perfect coffee.
His chemistry skills allowed him to truly understand the coffee brewing process. As a result, he was able to invent the famous and very thick Chemex filters (20 to 30 percent thicker than other filters) to eliminate any residue present in the coffee being produced. The original and unchanged hourglass design was made of glass in order to not affect taste. The Chemex and its filters have been praised by both the scientific and artistic communities, and have received numerous international awards.
You should absolutely use Chemex filters with the Chemex brewing system. In fact, without these filters, you won’t be able to take advantage of your hourglass at all. They produce pure-tasting coffee without any residue.
