History
The Chemex coffeemaker was invented in 1941 by German chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. Throughout his career, he developed over 300 patents, with the goal of making everyday devices more functional but also more aesthetically pleasing. When designing the Chemex, Schlumbohm wanted to not only make brewing the perfect cup simple, but also to have the vessel be a thing of beauty.
As a chemist, he was very familiar with the chemistry involved in the coffee brewing process. It was this knowledge that led him to invent the well-known ultra-thick Chemex filters that remove all residue from the coffee. As for the hourglass design, which is still used today, he chose glass that would impart no flavour of its own to the coffee. The Chemex system and its filters have been acclaimed by the scientific and artistic communities alike, winning many international awards.
The carafe is made of non-porous, heat-resistant glass made in Germany. The collar is made of thick polished wood that provides a safe and secure grip.
The Classic model can make up to six cups of tasty coffee in only minutes and is easy to clean (simply remove the filter and rinse). It is very important to use Chemex filters with this brewing system. In fact, without these filters, you will not get the full benefits of the Chemex design!
