History
The Chemex coffeemaker was invented in 1941 by German chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. Throughout his career, he developed over 300 patents, with the goal of making everyday devices more functional, but also more aesthetically pleasing. When designing the Chemex, Schlumbohm wanted to not only make brewing the perfect cup simple, but also to have the vessel be a thing of beauty.
As a chemist, he was very familiar with the chemistry involved in the coffee brewing process. It was this knowledge that led him to invent the well-known ultra-thick Chemex filters that remove all residue from the coffee (20% to 30% thicker than other filters). As for the hourglass design, which is still used today, he chose glass that would impart no flavour of its own into the coffee. The Chemex system and its filters have been acclaimed by the scientific and artistic communities alike, winning many international awards.
It is very important to use Chemex filters with a Chemex brewing system, otherwise you will not get the benefits of the hourglass design. Chemex filters produce pure tasting, residue-free coffee.
