History
The dripper first appeared in the early 20th century, hundreds of years after coffee was discovered. A German woman by the name of Melitta Bentz came up with the idea of brewing coffee with a paper filter inserted into a brass container with holes at the base. A true visionary, Bentz founded a dripper company in 1908 that is now a multinational corporation. Initially, the filter holder had eight holes. In the 1930s, the dripper and paper filter evolved into their well-known conical shape. Around 1960, after extensive testing, Bentz decided to focus on producing the single-hole model.
The dripper is used for what is known as a pour-over coffee, which is not only delicious, but quick and ridiculously easy to brew. This system is perfect for tasting specialty coffees or those from individual regions, as it brings out the beans’ most subtle flavours. The filter holder is an inexpensive option that produces a high-quality result.
The Hario V60-02 dripper must be used with the Hario V60 filters, available here. You must choose a drip (coarse) grind for this brewing system, even with the filter, as the coffee and water are in contact for quite some time. With just one hole at the bottom, the filter holder is great for regulating flow, while brewing the coffee more delicately. This device allows you to make up to 240 mL of coffee at a time in under two minutes. The filter holder is made of ceramic, which is a great material for retaining the liquid’s heat.
